"Is there really an Olan Mills ?"

Taken from the unpublished, though often spoken, memoirs of Llew Chapman:

To borrow a phrase from the famous Christmas question about Santa Claus....Yes, there really is an Olan Mills.

Olan and I have been friends for many years since our days at McCallie in the late forties. The photography business had been started by his Dad several years earlier in Alabama and Mr. Mills moved the headquarters to Chattanooga a bit before Olan and I met.

In those days, before there were many photo studios, Olan’s Dad had his sales people solicit business by going door to door. A coupon was sold to the home owner for $1.00 which entitled them to an 8"X10" sepia toned portrait after the photos were made.(This was before the days of color photography and the sepia tone was very impressive). Shortly after the coupons were sold, a photographer would set up the "studio" in a motel and customers would come, have the pictures made, and return a few days later to select their $1.00 photo. At this time the customer was offered additional photos which many ordered This unique sales operation proved to be very profitable and the Olan Mills business flourished.

In the  summer of 1948 after our graduation from McCallie, Olan and I and two other close friends sold the $1.00 coupons in towns in Ohio, Michigan and Cape Cod during a two week sales trip. We kept 50 cents of each sale and the company got the rest. Our sales were NOT that great and we began staying in VERY cheap motels and eating as cheaply as possible, not a good existence for McCallie graduates who thought they had the world by the tail and were headed for college.

We later realized that the trip was a way to help Olan learn the business and, to this day, we say our "training trip" is the reason Olan Mills studios have done so well. We had many interesting sales adventures on the trip and we have enjoyed telling family and friends about these events over and over for over 50 years. Some are beginning to tire of hearing them!

Following graduation from college, Olan joined the business and began using the telephone to solicit sales. The Olan Mills portrait studios were established all over the country; newspaper advertising helped generate a lot of business. Olan has introduced many other sales and operations techniques to improve the business.

Olan and his family have been very generous donors to many civic and religious efforts over the years. We have remained good friends all of these years and we still enjoy getting together and, you guessed it, re-telling stories about our famous trip.

Note from Blog editor: I think we're ready to hear those traveling salesmen stories now!!

Lee Morgan Shahan - 1936

Entries in Evelyn Morgan Shahan’s diary
Wednesday, January 1, 1936.....Returned to Murphy (NC) after a month’s  stay in Asheville. A heavy snow on ground begins to melt.

Saturday, November 21, 1936.....Pains began at 1 a.m. Thought nothing of it but had appointment with Doctor at 10. He sent me to Erlanger at once. Sonny arrived at 5:30.

Saturday, December 5, 1936.....I am so worried and disappointed., the negro wouldn’t come, I can’t ride to the country. I cried & cried. Martha came over telling me what to do like I was a baby.
Monday, December 7, 1936.....Aunt T & Jane came this p.m. I have been sitting up most of the day. Feel grand but can’t walk around much yet. Max is so proud of the baby, will be glad to all get home.
Thursday, December 10, 1936.....No company today. The nurses stay in my room most of the time. They have named Sonnye “Erlanger’s Sweetheart.” Max & I had a little spat tonight.
**I found in one of Mother's other journals that the reason they stayed in the hospital so long was because Myrtis Shahan (her mother-in-law) paid for her to stay for three weeks. They were renting a house on top of Lookout Mtn., the home of Mrs. H.C. Chapman (Llew Chapman's paternal grandmother) and at that time not many people lived up there during the wintertime.**
Saturday, December 12, 1936.....We left the hospital with many good byes bade us.  We stopped by 930 & Martha’s to show Son. We came to the county(Villanow), such a cold windy day, they didn’t expect us. Ga & Lewis came by.

Monday, December 14, 1936.....It’s just too much for me to bathe Son. I'll have to get Mama to. Mrs. Stansell and her two came to see Son, they had a cold. I was so worried.
Tuesday, December 15, 1936.....Moody came by to see Son. Mrs. Love watched him get his bath. Wrote Max this a.m. It’s the first letter we’ve written since we’ve been married.
Saturday, December 19, 1936....Son cried for four hours last night, he must have had colic, that is the most he has cried since he’s been here. Max slept on as though nothing was happening.

Saturday, December 26, 1936.....Packed & returned to mt. Would like to have stayed another month but afraid of Mama’s cold. She hated to see the baby leave.

Larry's Camera

Notes from July 5, 2006

I found my brother Larry’s camera yesterday. He has been dead several years now.
The blue plastic container first looked to store nothing of value. Just computer odds and ends, the stuff you can’t stand to throw away, but is outdated to where it is of no use to anyone.
I realized the contents were Larry’s when I came upon the Konica camera case. You could tell immediately it was his, the leather rubbed to a buff color at the seams with a colorful woven neck strap.  Duct tape held two metal canisters where the strap meets the case. One case still held a roll of Kodak 36 exposure film, unused.
I unsnapped the back of the case to find a 35 mm Konica with manual settings. I advanced the film and took a picture. Amazingly it clicked. Not only was there film in the camera, but the battery still worked after all this time.
Curiosity had me have the film developed. The few pictures that turned out were a good reflection of his interests: a writing spider web, raccoon in the yard, an owl that looked to be perched somewhere in his house and his companion, Carmen. The quality wasn’t good but it’s like a fine line connection to him.
It started me thinking of my family’s involvement with cameras and pictures. Mother was the director and Dad was the producer and operator of the 8mm home movies and black and white photos from their first box Kodak.
Before those we have family pictures dating back to the 1800s of the unsmiling formally posed family portraits. Well, most of them are like that. There is one of a patriarch with grey beard, no coat, sitting under a large tree with several other people including a young black girl in gingham dress head covered with small braids. My grandmother did my hair that way on one summer visit when she couldn’t stand it being in my eyes anymore.
Whatever started the interest both of my brothers and I had cameras and used them starting in the 1950s. I think Lee and Larry were more selective with what they took pictures of.  I myself have a tendency, a neurosis my children would say, to want to record anything and everything. My son and his two boys together because he does not live with them and I want them to see what they all three mean to each other. My daughter and her son so he can look back at the many smiles he and his single mom shared although raising him alone was stressful at times. My mother and her great grandchildren so they will have some memory of her. And just about anything else I see.
And, yes, spider webs. Just as one of Larry’s last pictures was the spider web in the early morning light I took pictures of spider webs on a bush early one day last week. Maybe I appreciate finding his camera at this time because he died when he was 62.  And I just turned 62.  Carpe diem!

Family History (John and Alonzo Shahan served in 1st Alabama Infantry C.S.A)

This information is some that Larry or Aunt Martha found. I'm including it on the family page for any who might be interested in Civil War history. Off-hand I don't know Alonzo's relation to our immediate family, but guess there is one. I thought it was interesting how many Shahans were born in Sevier Co and Blount Co. Surely it was talked about, but I sure didn't listen. Do have Mother's journal notes where she and Larry with Mike spent sometime trying to find a cemetary off Boyd's Creek, but without any luck as far as finding family members grave sites.

Family History (John and Alonzo Shahan served in 1st Alabama Infantry C.S.A)

WATKINS' LIST OF SOLDIERS BURIED IN THE CONFEDERATE CEMETERY IN
CHATTANOOGA

In 1867 the bodies of 887 soldiers who had died in Chattanooga Jan. 1 to May 31, 1863 (the weeks immediately following the battle of Murfreesboro), were moved from a cemetery close to the Tennessee River, where they had been temporarily interred, to the Confederate Cemetery. A board at the head of each grave was marked with the name of the soldier, his state and his command, and a number. Col. R. L.Watkins copied the names and prepared the following list. It is probable that when the headstones were
hastily made-six or seven each day for four month the names were frequently misspelled, in the case of difficult ones at least. This explanation accounts for the many peculiar and infrequent names on the list.
Searchers for names should allow for variation in sound and spelling.

Many of the wounded in the battle of Murfreesboro were sent to Chattanooga by train. Some of them died en route and others in the station immediately upon arrival. Homes and hospitals were filled with other soldiers who lingered, some a few days and some for months. Col. Watkins began his list with the number 142 and the date Feb. I, 1863. It is presumed that 141 men died in January and were buried in the very low ground where the water washed the graves and the wooden boards, and that the names were not
decipherable when he made his list in 1867. The last number "887" is dated May 31, 1863.

The list bears this inscription:

"Presented to the Confederate Memorial Association March i8, 1876, by R. L. Watkins, who assisted in obtaining this record in 1867 and participated in removing the dead to the graves where they now lie. This was when the Confederate Association was first organized. Each grave was numbered and named on headboard as this list
shows and was easily identified.
"R. L. Watkins."

Kentucky Derby 1948

From Mother's diary.....April 30, 1948...."Mrs. Tulle, practical nurse, is keeping the children for the week-end. We left for the Ky Derby this a.m. Stopped in Berea for lunch, reached Louisville 6:00 p.m. Mrs. Frank went with us. We are visiting the R.J. Byrnes'. Entered Churchill Downs 9:30 and stayed until 6:00 p.m. A great crowd, a big show and very exciting. Left Louisville Sunday at 9:30 a.m. The children so glad to see us. A short, but exhilarating week-end."
The picture above was one snapped by a sidewalk photographer at the Derby. It sure wasn't a poised shot, i.e., unsmiling faces. The glass, pictured to the right, is a souvenir from that trip.

Who won the Derby? According to Wikipedia:  In the Kentucky Derby, ridden by Arcaro, CITATION won by 3 ½ lengths over his stablemate, eventual 1949 Horse of the Year Coaltown, and Arcaro gave the widow of former jockey Al Snider a share of his Derby purse money.  Citation was then sent to Baltimore where he won the Preakness Stakes by 5 ½ lengths. From there he won the Jersey Stakes before going toElmont, New York and becoming the 8th Triple Crown winner by capturing the Belmont Stakes, tying the stakes record of 2:28 1/5 set by the 6th Triple Crown winner, Count Fleet.
